Students have no excuse turning up late in this school bus! It breathes fire and rockets along at speeds up to 367 mph!
At nearly 10 feet high and 35 feet long, the School Time jet-powered school bus is the largest jet land vehicle on earth and the first of its kind. With42,000 horsepower, this bus is equipped with the same General Electric J-79 turbojet that powers F-4 Phantom II fighter jets. Dubbed "School Time" the bus also belches out 80 foot flames, sending huge clouds of smoke blazing from the tail pipe.
School Time is the creation of Indianapolis based jet car designer and drive Paul Stender. "The entire vehicle was custom built," Stender said. "There's no way the original bus could have withstood the speeds that I take it to." The Big Bend, Wisc native grew up racing motorcycles and cars. He raced his first jet car, the Jazz Jet Funny Car in 1995. Since then, he's designed anddriven a fleet of outrageous jet-powered vehicles, including a jet outhouse, jet beer truck, jet semi truck and the 400 mph Dodge Ramjet.
Despite its engine size, this school bus still seats three passengers. Media, VIP guests, and sponsors all get in line for a fast trip down the runway! But sadly, it won't be taking any kids to school in record time, its for shows only.
Entertainment is just one of the reasons why Stender decided to build a jet school bus. "The second is to inspire kids to keep away from drugs," he said. "We do a lot of displays at schools and we are trying to show kids there's more to life than sitting in front of computers."
His wife Therese, a racer herself, serves as School Time's crew chief. They travel to 30 events together every year with their Great Danes, Saber and Atlas.
